From the Classroom: Why Prevention Matters
As I teach our Play It Safe curriculum, I often remind older students that while it may feel easier to tell a friend when something is wrong, a friend cannot stop abuse—only a trusted adult can. Speaking up is hard, but it’s how children get help.
Recently, a student shared concerns about a friend who may have been experiencing abuse. The next day, I noticed another student quietly crying during the lesson. When I checked in, she shared that she didn’t feel believed at home. With time and reassurance, she was able to disclose her experience.
Because a child spoke up and another was given a safe space to be heard, we were able to take steps to help.
This is why prevention education matters. When children are taught to recognize unsafe situations and trust safe adults, it can change—and even save—their lives.
